Cyber Safe: 2024 corporate best practices for alts managers

For Cybersecurity Awareness Month, we’re launching our Cyber Safe series. Since cybersecurity is a team sport, we’ll start by sharing some best practices for the alternative investment community in the office, at home, or on the go! At the end of the month, we’ll host our first masterclass: From Tech Talk to Board Talk: Mastering the Cyber Program Executive Briefing.

In this first instalment of our 2024 cyber-safe best practices, our CISO Simon Eyre shares his seven corporate best practices that will help you secure.

The ultimate corporate info security best practices list:

  1. Beware of unexpected MFA push notifications. If you did not request an MFA code, do not blindly accept one — this may be an attempt at fraud.
  2. Protect your corporate endpoint devices and never share these devices with others. If a corporate endpoint is stolen, react to and report the theft quickly.
  3. Use strong passwords and a password manager. Never include personal information in your passwords, and never recycle passwords.
  4. Verify any websites you visit by checking for the correct HTTPs and URLs. Fraudsters can set up lookalike sites to trick unsuspecting web visitors, so stay vigilant.
  5. Talk to your supervisor or IT team about what software to use to improve efficiency in your role. Never authorize use of applications or software without IT approval.
  6. See something? Say something! Report suspicious activity when you encounter it and notify your supervisor immediately. Even if it seems small, early intervention is key to preventing a breach.
  7. Review company training sessions. Double check that any information security training covers general user awareness and best practices and focuses on the latest threats and how to best respond to these. Utilize these resources.

Implementing clear corporate standards for data security is a great place to start, but there’s more. Check out part two of our 2024 cyber safe series where Simon gives his take on personal cyber safety.
